Jon Gruden was one of the best coaches in the NFL, and it’s entirely possible that he still could have been to this day. Had it not been for leaked emails that included some racist, misogynistic, and homophobic remarks, he could still be the Raiders bench boss today.
Gruden wasn’t only the coach in Las Vegas during his illustrious career as a bench boss in the big league. He also had some time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their head coach, not to mention tons of other teams as position coach and coordinator.
Following a deep dive into Gruden’s emails to former Washington Commanders GM Bruce Allen, it was discovered that from 2011 to 2018, Gruden sent numerous emails involving some very inappropriate remarks and was then ousted as the Raiders’ head coach in 2021.
Gruden recently took a job as a full-time broadcasting employee with Dave Portnoy’s Barstool Sports, and it was even a shock to the people who are now his co-workers. However, according to Gruden himself, he could have chosen a coaching job.

Jon Gruden Could Have Coached At Tenessee
According to Pardon My Take, Gruden revealed quite an interesting tidbit about a job he was interested in. While he didn’t reveal the exact time he got the offer, he revealed that he was offered to be the Head Coach of the Volunteers, where he had previously been an assistant.

In addition to Gruden’s connections in Tennessee, his wife was previously a cheerleader at the school. “My wife cheered at Tennessee. I love Tennessee. I was a graduate coach there, and I did talk to the Athletic Director,” he said, adding, “And I don’t look up to anybody more than I look up to Peyton Manning and Kenny Chesney.”
Gruden went on to note that he was having fun at his job at the time. “At that time I was having so much fun on Monday Night Football with Mike Tirico I couldn’t take any other job,” which means he most likely got the offer between 2011 and 2014.
Odds are, the job was probably offered to the former head coach in 2012 when the Vols went from having Derek Dooley to Butch Jones lead the charge. Who knows, it could have been really interesting, and at this point, Gruden probably regrets not taking the job.
