Multiple students from the University of Connecticut have been expelled for vandalism during celebrations of the Huskies’ men’s basketball team winning the National Championship.
Per the Associated Press, the school has expelled several students for acts of vandalism while celebrating the team’s 76-59 win over the San Diego State Aztecs on Apr. 3. UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz offered the following statement, via the AP:
“Although we can’t address individual students’ outcomes, we can say that some reviews have concluded with expulsions.”
Via the report, the vandalism included smashed windows, a van being flipped over on its side and damage to poles and signs. It was noted by the AP that the damage cost several thousands of dollars.
The vandalism saw authorities arrest over 12 people, and per Reitz, expelled students can appeal the decision. It was not immediately reported how many students were confirmed from the university.
The Huskies’ easy win over San Diego State secured the school its fifth national championship in the men’s basketball program. UConn also won it all in 1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014, enjoying a San Antonio Spurs’ dynastic-like run. From 1999 to 2014, the Spurs won five NBA Championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014).
UConn, the 10th ranked team, finished with a record of 31-8 on the year. Their thrilling postseason run included a blowout win over No. 3 ranked Gonzaga (82-54) in the Elite Eight and a 72-59 win over No. 5 ranked Miami in the Final Four.
