College football fans are asking some serious questions after Oklahoma State upset Kansas State on Friday night, thanks in large part to the performance of one particular player who probably shouldn’t have been there.
On September 24, Cowboys star safety Trey Rucker was arrested for DUI. And two days later, on Tuesday, September 26, he was charged.
Less than two weeks later, in Stillwater, Rucker was causing havoc on the field (rather than on the roads) by recording 11 tackles (5 solo) and a tackle for a loss that turned out to be an awfully big play for Oklahoma State.
Two plays later, the Cowboys would cause a turnover, keeping their lead over the Wildcats at 16 points. They would go on to win the game, 29-21.
In the video above, you can hear the commentators mention that Rucker’s status for the game was unknown due to his recent legal issues.

What makes matters worse is this wasn’t Rucker’s first run-in with the law. A few years earlier, in 2021, he was charged with another DUI, along with charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of an accident, and operating a car with a suspended license. He pled guilty at the time and the charges were reduced to misdemeanors.
As for Rucker’s latest arrest, his next hearing is set for November 6. In the meantime, Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy is allowing him to play.
“I’m going to let the system run its course,” Gundy told reporters. “All I know is what they’ve told me and the information I have.”
