College football is just a few weeks away from returning and like most big football programs, the Texas Longhorns have high expectations for the 2019 season.
The Longhorns went 10-4 last season and finished the year with an impressive victory over the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl.
Despite previous struggles in recent years, Texas head coach Tom Herman referred to the Longhorns as the “Mecca” of college football on ESPN’s Golic and Wingo. He believes that applies for the Longhorns as well as most programs in the state of Texas.
“I fell in love with big-time football as a graduate assistant here (at Texas) and I’m a Division III guy and had coached a year of Division III football, and all of a sudden I’m a graduate assistant at the Mecca of college football.”
“So, it certainly was appealing back then and we’re proud to be back 20 years later as the head coach,” Herman said on Golic and Wingo. “But I think the state of Texas does well when all of its in-state schools do well, but when you’re the university of whatever state it is you carry a responsibility to make your state proud.”
Social media wasn’t having it:
Was he currently on blow when he said that?

If he means important in the past but not relevant now then he’s correct.

Why does the Mecca go 8-4 every year ??? pic.twitter.com/LZiZsgKXKy

Little too far west on the map to be the Mecca of college football. That’s why their conference fell apart and they lost one of their biggest rivals! ?

One interesting note about Texas: they’ve had numerous blowout losses in the last 40 years. Ridiculous losses like 66-3, 66-15, 63-14, 65-13…just go back and look at their all-time results. It’s embarrassing for a program that well-regarded!

On ESPN today Tom Herman (head coach at Texas) said “I love coaching at Texas! Everyone wants to play here. We are the mecca of college football” Tell me Tom were you high when giving this interview or do you just not understand there are other teams in college football?!?!

lol, Tom Herman really called Texas “the mecca of football”
LOL, Texas isn’t even the mecca of football in the Big 12

Herman will most certainly have his opportunity to prove that Texas is the “Mecca” of college football this upcoming season.
