The Texas Longhorns’ prolific three-man quarterback room is now a dynamic duo.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Longhorns second-stringer Maalik Murphy is planning to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Thamel added that Murphy, who made five game appearance this season, has informed coaches of his plans.
Texas’ starting quarterback, Quinn Ewers, was widely projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Ewers, however, is expected to return for one more year of college football — thus preventing Murphy from taking over as the starter for the Longhorns.
With hot shot prospect Arch Manning also waiting in the wings behind Ewers, it’s obvious that Murphy will benefit from a change of scenery. And Murphy most certainly won’t have a problem generating interest from other notable NCAA programs.
The 6-foot-5, 238-pound Murphy threw for 477 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in the limited action he saw for the Longhorns this year. No. 3 ranked Texas faces No. 2 Washington in the Sugar Bowl, one of the two semifinal matchups for the College Football Playoff National Championship.
Ewers has pieced together a remarkable 2023 season for the Longhorns, completing 70.7 percent of his pass attempts for 3,161 yards and 21 touchdowns against only six interceptions to go along with five rushing scores.
