There is still uncertainty over who will start between Arch Manning and Quinn Ewers for Texas in Week 5.
The Longhorns are facing a quarterback quandary heading into their game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs this weekend, with Manning having started against Louisiana Monroe in Week 4.
The 19-year-old replaced Ewers after he sustained an oblique injury against UTSA in Week 3 and gave an impressive account of himself. He has since led Texas to two wins on the bounce and will be difficult to drop, though the expectation is that Ewers will be the main man again once he’s back to full fitness.
Ewers has been listed as “questionable” ahead of Saturday’s game, and Steve Sarkisian would like to give him a chance to return if he’s ready. Still, he sounded out a warning to the QB during his press conference this week.
“Quinn has to prove he’s ready. It’s not just about being physically cleared, but executing the game plan at the highest level,” the head coach said.

Some may take this to mean that Manning could get the nod against Mississippi State, but we should know who’s going to be the Week 5 starter by the end of the day.
Arch Manning Could Have An Opportunity To Work On His Mistakes With Another Start
The upcoming game presents the best opportunity to rest Ewers. The Longhorns are favored to beat the Bulldogs relatively easily and have a bye week thereafter, which would leave the quarterback with plenty of time to heal.
Sarkisian will likely feel that resting Ewers would likely be in the program’s best interest.
As for Manning, the younger signal-caller made some mistakes in his first start as he tried to force several big plays, two of which led to interceptions. But he still led Texas to a whopping 51-33 victory, completing 15 of 29 attempts for 258 yards and two touchdowns.
