Back in July, former Miami Hurricanes quarterback Tate Martell found a new home at UNLV, which is where he played high school football at legendary Bishop Gorman. Following his transfer from Ohio State, Martell was never able to earn playing time with Miami.
He played in five games in 2019 before choosing to opt-out of the 2020 COVID-19 impacted season. Martell completed his only attempt for seven yards and had seven rushing attempts during his Miami career.
It does not look like he will be playing for his new school right off the bat as UNLV released its Week 1 depth chart on Monday and Martell was not listed.
Martell opened up about his transfer decision earlier this month:

“The schools I was talking to randomly stopped talking to me once I told them I had surgery on my thumb,” Martell wrote in a series of slides on the TikTok post. “I hit rock bottom about a year ago and was going to quit football. Decided one random day to leave Miami and come home and train. Dedicated all my time to graduating, getting in the best shape of my life and changing myself as a person.
“Then two months ago I had surgery on my thumb, thought everything I worked to become was for nothing. UNLV still gave me the opportunity to play for them. I’m extremely grateful. I’m continuing to recover from surgery and work everyday with my teammates.”
UNLV is set to open the 2021 regular season on Sept. 2 against Eastern Washington.
