Tate Martell once had a promising career coming out of high school, but things never really went right for him at the collegiate level.
The former Ohio State quarterback was looked at as the next big thing at the program, but as soon as Justin Fields transferred in, he went out. Martell would then take his talents to UNLV, but only played sparingly during the 2021 season, throwing just six passes.
On Tuesday, it was reported from Joe Arrigo of Franchise Sports Media that Martell was retiring from football.
“I wanted to give an update on UNLV QB @TheTateMartell: He is retired from football and focusing on business ventures,” Arrigo said. “He is grateful for @coacharroyo and UNLV for giving him a chance. I would also keep an eye on what tate has going on business wise, it’s about to blow up.”
The UNLV football program notched a major offseason win on Tuesday when former Tennessee quarterback Harrison Bailey committed to the Scarlet and Gray. That likely factored in Tate’s decision as well.
Martell finished the 2021 season with just two completed passes for 27 yards and would transition to wide receiver later in the year.
