A fundraiser to assist the family of Stephen F. Austin’s Nathan Bain skyrocketed well past $30,000 just mere hours after his last-second layup to defeat the top ranked Duke Blue Devils.
The GoFundMe was setup after his family had their lives turned upside down by Hurricane Dorian in Freeport, Bahamas.
“My family lost a whole lot this year,” an emotional Bain told ESPN after the Lumberjacks’ 85-83 overtime win. He added, “I’m just playing this game for them … I just want to make my country proud.”
Just in case folks might think this is an NCAA violation, it was actually the Stephen F. Austin athletic department who launched the fundraiser on September 17th to help the Bain family recover. Before his game winner, the page had received a total of $2,010 from 26 donors and no one had donated to the effort in more than a month.
More than 950 donors have donated thousands in the hours after the victory.
The 5th-year senior has started 31 of 36 games over the past two seasons, averaging 5.5 points per contest.
