Spencer Rattler had no clue that he would be getting recruited yet again after coming into the 2021 season as a Heisman hopeful and possible top-5 draft pick in the NFL. Things fell apart against the Texas Longhorns for the second-straight year, but this time around, he did not get his job back after being benched.
After Lincoln Riley bolted for USC, Spencer announced he was entering the transfer portal. He would soon sign on with the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield had a lot to do with that.
So in his first message to Rattler, Satterfield offered a candid response.
“I told him, ‘Everybody in the country thinks you stink. Everybody in the country thinks I stink. Let’s go at this with the biggest possible chip on our shoulder,’” Satterfield recalled saying, per David Cloninger.

The Gamecocks finished the regular season No. 13 in the SEC in scoring offense, No. 12 in rushing offense, No. 13 in passing offense and No. 13 in total offense.
Rattler played in 9 games this season, and completed 140 of 187 passes for 1,483 yards, 11 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He had a monumental fall from grace, but now gets a second chance in a different program to rebuild himself.
