South Carolina Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler may have tipped the hand regarding his plans for 2023.
It’s not uncommon for a player at the NCAA to skip a bowl game if they declare for the NFL Draft. Rattler hasn’t done yet announced his plans for 2023, but some comments he shared to reporters suggest that he’s simply playing in the Gator Bowl against Notre Dame on Dec. 30 to repay head coach Shane Beamer.
Rattler said his coach has has “been great to me”, adding that playing in the Gator Bowl is “the least I can do.” You can see Rattler’s comments below:
Now, he hasn’t officially announced his plans for 2023. But it’s not hard to interpret Rattler’s words there as a sign that he’s planning to declare for the NFL Draft. We’ll just have to wait and see what his plans are.
Rattler was once viewed as a potential candidate to go first overall pick in the 2022 Draft, but that was before he lost his starting job to Caleb Williams (now at USC) in his final season with the Oklahoma Sooners.
The first overall pick of 2022 wound up being Georgia linebacker Travon Walker. The first quarterback taken was Pittsburgh product Kenny Pickett, who went 20th overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickett was the lone quarterback taken within the first 73 picks, with Desmond Ridder finally going 74th overall to the Atlanta Falcons.

Rather than declare for the NFL Draft, Rattler decided to continue his collegiate career. He transferred to South Carolina and had a mostly successful season, tossing 2,780 passing yards and 16 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.
