Shedeur Sanders’s odds of going No. 1 overall have dropped since his viral tweet about a past Colorado teammate.
The Buffaloes quarterback responded to comments from Xavier Smith — a safety who transferred out after Deion Sanders’ arrival — and has seen lots of criticism fly his way since then.
Smith was one of the players who was told to enter the transfer portal after Coach Prime arrived in Boulder and spoke to The Athletic in an article detailing what happened to the players the Hall of Famer cut from his CU roster.
The safety told the publication he didn’t get to speak to the head coach one-on-one, claiming Sanders never even tried to get to know him before handing him his marching orders.
“We sat on the sofa, and he’s talking to us, but he’s not even looking at us,” he was quoted as saying. “I’m looking Coach Kelly dead in his eyes. (Sanders) said he felt like I should hit the portal. He didn’t want me to waste a year thinking I could earn a spot.”
“I was actually getting mad, like tears coming to my eyes. Because, bro, you never even tried to get to know me. He was destroying guys’ confidence and belief in themselves,” he added. “The way he did it, it could’ve been done with a little more compassion.”

Things Have Changed Since Shedeur Sanders Responded
Shedeur Sanders took to Twitter/X to suggest Smith had to be an average player at best, as he doesn’t even remember him.
“I (don’t) even remember him to be honest,” he wrote. “Bro had to be very mid at best.”
The CU QB prompted quite a backlash with his response. And, according to Barstool Gambling, his odds of going No. 1 in the next NFL Draft have dropped from +100 to +300.
Of course, Shedeur’s draft positioning will be based on how he actually performs on the field. He showed he wasn’t all talk last season, completing 69.3 percent of his passing attempts while throwing for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Colorado’s weak offensive line often left him exposed, making him the joint-most-sacked quarterback in college, along with Old Dominion’s Grant Wilson. Primetime has made moves to fix this glaring issue ahead of next term, so it will be interesting to see whether he’s any better in 2024.
