It’s official. Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders is making the move to the FBS following a successful three-year tenure at Jackson State.
Late on Saturday evening, the Colorado Buffaloes officially announced that Sanders is the school’s new football head coach. Leading up to the announcement, several reports had indicated that “Prime Time” was Colorado-bound.
The Buffaloes are hoping that Sanders will be able to reverse the fortunes of a school that is coming off one of the worst seasons in their history. The Buffaloes lost 11 of 12 games this year, and the lone victory (against California on Oct. 15) was a 20-13 victory in overtime.

On Saturday, Sanders led the Tigers to an easy 43-24 victory over the Southern Jaguars in the SWAC Championship Game. Jackson State will try to keep their perfect record intact when they play North Carolina Central in the 2022 Celebration Bowl on Dec. 17 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Sanders took over as the head coach of Jackson State in 2020, leading them to a 4-3 record in his first season there. In 2021, the Tigers went 11-2 and defeated Prairie View A&M to win the SWAC Championship, but the season ended with a 31-10 blowout loss over South Carolina State in the Celebration Bowl.
The former NFL and MLB star is often regarded as the greatest cornerback in NFL history. Sanders won 1994 Defensive Player of the Year honors and was named to eight Pro Bowls in his Hall of Fame career. He won Super Bowl rings in back-to-back seasons, with the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys in 1994 and 1995, respectively.
Sanders played his final NFL season for the Baltimore Ravens in 2005 before retiring. He worked as an analyst for CBS Sports and NFL Network before taking Jackson State’s head coaching position.
