SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey called out the Worldwide Leader In Sports for sharing a portion of the 2024 football schedule.
Earlier this week, ESPN announced 13 games and dates for SEC showdowns in 2024. This includes a can’t-miss showdown between the reigning national champion Georgia Bulldogs and Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide on Sept. 28.
Per Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Sankey threw shade at ESPN for leaking part of next year’s schedule during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
“We were trying to protect it,” Sankey said. “Someone at ESPN apparently leaked it.”
Making this a little awkward is the fact that ESPN and the SEC have a successful business relationship. In Dec. 2020, the network announced a lucrative 10-year with the SEC for men’s basketball and football that will begin next year.
The other 12 matchups that ESPN leaked are (in order of date): Texas A&M vs. Florida (Sept. 14), Tennessee vs. Oklahoma (Sept. 21), Florida vs. Tennessee (Oct. 12), Alabama vs. Tennessee (Oct. 19), Georgia vs. Texas (also Oct. 19), LSU vs. Texas A&M (Oct. 26), Alabama vs. LSU (Nov. 9), Texas vs. Arkansas (Nov. 16), Alabama vs. Oklahoma (Nov. 23), Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State, Texas vs. Texas A&M and Auburn vs. Alabama during the Nov. 28-30 Thanksgiving weekend.
