Adrian Wojnarowski, an American sports columnist and ESPN NBA insider, has reported on X (previously known as Twitter) that Ryan Dunn from the Virginia Cavaliers is planning to enter the 2024 NBA Draft. Dunn, known for his versatility in defense, is 6-foot-8 and has a wingspan of 7-2, making him one of the most dominant defensive forces in the country.
“I had an amazing two years at UVA, and I’m now focused on the next step in my life. I got good feedback from the NBA and am ready for the next level. I am all in. Confidence-wise, it wasn’t always there for me; I just let it go from beyond the arc. I’m going to have a whole different mindset with that. Much of my role was being a rebounder and making plays at the rim. I did the best I could to try to help my team win. I’m trying to watch as much of the NBA as possible, especially players with my body type and frame, such as Herb Jones and OG Anunoby. I want to see how they perform in the playoffs when it’s gone time.” G Ryan Dunn said this to ESPN.
Dunn’s biography is one of the most fascinating stories in the draft class. He started as a late bloomer and initially committed to Virginia as a walk-on. However, he grew seven inches as a sophomore in high school, eventually reaching six feet eight.
Several NBA analysts praised Dunn’s mobility and defense
Despite playing only 13 minutes per game in his rookie year, he was projected to be a lottery pick heading into his sophomore season due to his physical abilities and defensive versatility. Dunn’s poor shooting performance raised questions about his decision to turn pro.
Still, he was an outstanding defender, leading the team with 77 blocked shots and coming in second with 44 steals, trailing only senior guard and two-time conference defensive player of the year Reece Beekman.
Dunn’s performance in this season was not as good as expected. He made only 7 of his 35 3-pointers and just 53% of his free throw attempts. Dunn agrees that his outside shooting needs improvement, and he focuses on it during the pre-draft training.

Since the season ended, he has worked with NBA development coach Phil Beckner in Phoenix. Although several NBA analysts praised Dunn’s mobility and defense, they doubted his ability to shoot the ball well enough to secure a position in a professional club.
