The Ohio State Buckeyes program is aiming to produce its seventh Heisman Trophy winner in 2024, and one player is already putting his name at the top of the list: Caleb Downs.
Ohio State safety Caleb Downs is so talented on both sides of the ball that he plans to utilize those skills on the field.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day stated that the Alabama transfer could be deployed on both sides of the ball during the 2024 season.
Day told reporters Tuesday that Caleb Downs, who’s listed as a safety on the roster, has also been attending some running back meetings.
“I know that he has the capability to do it,” the coach said. “I know he has the athleticism to do it. We’ll see where it goes.”
If this happens, Caleb Downs will be following in the footsteps of Colorado superstar Travis Hunter, who played wide receiver and cornerback for the Colorado Buffaloes during the 2023 season.

On offense, Hunter finished with 57 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, he added 31 tackles, five PDUs, and three INTs as a defender. His numbers would’ve been better if not for an injury that caused him to miss several games.
If Caleb Downs is as good as Hunter, the Ohio State Buckeyes could find themselves fighting for a National Championship.
