Kim Mulkey may have once coached Brittney Griner, but they clearly no longer have a relationship, and things are likely to stay that way for the foreseeable future.
Kim Mulkey and Brittney Griner led Baylor to a national title a decade ago, but their relationship deteriorated when the former Baylor coach and current LSU Tigers head coach decided not to give a public endorsement for Griner, who was detained in a Russian prison for nearly ten months after allegedly having hashish oil in her luggage.
According to a report from the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, Mulkey is back in the news this week as reports state she allegedly disciplined a player for showing support for Brittney Griner during her detainment in Russia in 2022.
Earlier this year, Mulkey was on the defensive when she called out the Washington Post and reporter Kent Babb for a “hit piece,” threatening to sue if “a false story” was published. The story was released but did not do much damage to her reputation at all. It also did not feature the incident involving the Tigers player supporting Brittney Griner.
The Daily Advertiser did some digging and revealed the details left out.
An email from the reporter stated, “An LSU player was disciplined for screenshotting and sharing a social media message of support for Griner during Griner’s detainment.”
However, the Daily Advertiser was unable to confirm whether this was true.

“That was not part of the published story. The Advertiser was unable to confirm whether an LSU player was disciplined, and the school declined to comment.”
Kim Mulkey Has Zero Contact With Brittney Griner Since Return From Imprisonment
LSU coach Kim Mulkey and Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner are both continuing on with their respective careers without speaking with each other.
Mulkey stated back in March 2023 that she had not spoken to Griner since the USA completed a trade to free her from a Russian prison.
“I’m glad she’s back,” Mulkey said at the Final Four news conference. “I’m glad she’s safe, she’s sound. I think everybody is.”
Baylor was the first 40-0 national champion with Griner, and despite their differences, they are forever etched in history together.
