College football has experienced seismic shifts in the last few years, including the demise of one strong power conference, the ability for players to be compensated through NIL, and the absurdity of transfer portals that mimic free agency.
We are now heading into something even more insane for college football and this idea cannot be dismissed.
A group that includes “several” college presidents is proposing to forever alter the way college football has been organized, according to The Athletic‘s Andrew Marchand and Stewart Mandel.
The group, which is called “College Sports Tomorrow,” has floated the idea of creating a two-tiered structure among FBS schools. Philadelphia 76ers owner David Blitzer, Len Perna of TurnkeyZRG search firm, Syracuse chancellor Kent Syverud, and West Virginia president Gordon Gee are also said to be part of the initiative of this group.
The new proposal for college football includes promotion and relegation, a playoff with no selection committee, and a system where a players’ union would negotiate terms for NIL, transfer, and pay. This is just the start of things.
Among the other things will be the new college football league consisting of the top-70 programs from the five former major conferences, plus Notre Dame and Southern Methodist University in one-tier.
“The perpetual members would be in seven 10-team divisions, joined by an eighth division of teams that would be promoted from the second tier.”

The top 70 programs in college football would never be at risk of being relegated, but there would be an incentive for those teams in the second tier to win their way into contention for a title.
When it comes to the playoffs, it would be made up of the eight division winners plus eight wild cards, which will be based on record. It would be a similar system to the NFL playoffs and would eliminate the need for a committee.
College Football Forever Changed With The Inclusion of NIL
College football forever changed when NIL not only altered the financial landscape but also reshaped how fans consume college football.
The increased visibility of players through endorsement deals and social media has essentially created more of an experience for fans. Some see it as negative and some see it as positive. It’s all about how you choose to consume it.
