The college football world is in mourning this weekend after tragic news came down on Sunday that 19-year-old Lorvens Florestal Jr. was shot and killed.
According to a release from CSU, Florestal was the victim of a random act of violence and was simply an innocent bystander, according to witnesses.
“My heart hurts for Lorvens Florestal’s family and friends back home in South Florida,” CSU head coach Autry Denson said. “Our CSU football ministry, the CSU family, and communities all over this country should never have to endure senseless acts of violence. Under no circumstances should this be the narrative of Lorvens’s life, a young man just beginning to live out his dream of being a Division One student-athlete.”
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Florestal played football for Charleston Southern University as a freshman walk-on.
“This unimaginable tragedy is something none of us should ever experience. That Lorvens’s life was taken so quickly and senselessly magnifies our grief,” said CSU President Dr. Dondi Costin.
Florestal attended Atlantic High School in Delray Beach, Florida, and had not yet played a game for the CSU Buccaneers.

The Buccaneers are set to begin their 2021 season on September 11 against The Citadel.
