Wide receiver Detraveon Brown signed a fake letter of intent to Ole Miss during a Wednesday ceremony. This is not a joke. This is not a drill. It actually happened.
Ole Miss reportedly had zero paperwork on Brown, and he didn’t currently hold a scholarship offer from them when he signed the fake letter of intent in front of a crowd.
The three-star Louisiana receiver of Northwood High School had been recruited by the Rebels and even officially visited Oxford leading up to National Signing Day but the program was not willing to accept his commitment, according to 247Sports.
“I’d like to thank God for everything he did for me. I wouldn’t be here in this position,” Brown said during his ceremony.
“They are the SEC and they’re a bigtime athletic program,” Brown told The Times after the ceremony. “I wanted to compete with the best, so that’s why I’m taking my talents there. They are using me at wide receiver. Houston was coming at me hard and the University of Kentucky.”
To make matters even worse, Brown actually told 247Sports just a few days ago that Ole Miss had pulled his offer.

“Coach (Derrick) Nix (from Ole Miss) told me today that they flipped a receiver,” Brown told 247 Sports prior to Wednesday. “He told me they didn’t have any more room for me. It’s a crazy business. I told coach Nix that I still love Ole Miss. He told me that they just flipped a receiver. It’s the way it is in this business. I don’t hold any hard feelings.”
Ole Miss officials told ESPN that Brown did not receive a formal offer nor was he sent scholarship papers. He knew he didn’t have an offer to play for the Rebels, yet still went through with the signing ceremony.
“Until yesterday, I was pretty sure that I was on my way to Ole Miss,” he said. “This assumption was based on a verbal offer from the school and reassurance even into the final hours that I would receive my National Letter of Intent today. As you know, this is not the case.
“Words can’t describe the stress and disappointment that this has caused my family. However, I am still optimistic about my future as a collegiate football player and will continue to strive to make my dream a reality.”
On Thursday, however, North Texas announced that Brown signed with the Mean Green. Brown was a 3-star recruit who caught 57 passes for 904 yards and 20 touchdowns this past season.
