Phil Jurkovec is looking for another way to make an impact on the field for the Pitt Panthers since throwing the football for them is not in his future any longer.
According to a report from Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the former Panthers starter at quarterback was demoted to third-string quarterback and promptly made a position change to tight end at practice this week.
With the Panthers mired in a 1-4 start and struggling offensively, they decided to bench starting quarterback Phil Jurkovec this week and will now start backup Christian Veilleux in their next game against No. 25 Louisville. Following the benching, he was demoted to third-string behind Nate Yarnell, according to Hiles’ report.
Per Hiles, Jurkovec informed teammates of the change Wednesday morning and began running routes with the other tight ends the following day.
Jurkovec has the size to play tight end at 6’5 and 245 pounds and he also has some athletic ability running with the football.
He had been a quarterback all throughout high school, so any time at tight end was likely as a child.
