You can’t win them all, but it’s those losses that fans always seem to remember the most.
Penn State head coach James Franklin is finding that out today, as he tried a couple of trick plays against no. 6 Michigan. And while one worked marvelously, it’s the one that failed miserably that has Nittany Lions Twitter in an uproar.
The first trick play came on Penn State’s opening drive. Facing a 4th & 6, Franklin dialed up a fake punt, and it worked to perfection.
After all of that, Penn State only managed to kick a field-goal. But the successful fake punt must have had Franklin feeling pretty good about himself. Because later on in the first quarter, he decided to attempt a fake field-goal on a 4th & goal situation from the Wolverines’ 2-yard line.
Unfortunately, on this occasion Jim Harbaugh’s team was prepared for the tomfoolery.

Football 101 will tell you that, if you’re going to go for it on 4th & goal from the 2-yard line, you’re much better off just lining up with your offense, rather than relying on your kicker and holder to successfully execute an offensive play.
Franklin completely ignored that basic idea, and he was roasted on Twitter for it:
