A player on the Oregon Ducks just changed the entire course of his young life after being arrested on disturbing charges this week.
Oregon Ducks defensive back Daylen Austin was arrested on Monday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run, according to the Eugene Police Department. Eugene Police Department officials are investigating the deadly hit-and-run incident that happened on April 15 in the area of West 4th Avenue and Polk Street.
“This is a complex investigation and EPD is still gathering information to be submitted to the Lane County District Attorney’s Office for a final charging decision,” police said in a statement, per ESPN.com.
The initial accident happened around 9:10 p.m. Monday and Austin was arrested at an apartment a little more than two hours later.
In the state of Oregon, a hit and run that results in injuries is considered a Class C felony.

On Wednesday, the Oregon Ducks defensive back was finally released from the Lane County Jail. Austin was officially charged with Failure to Perform Duties of a Driver to Injured Persons at that time.
His next court date is on May 22.

19-year-old Daylen Austin is a redshirt freshman on the Oregon Ducks and is from Long Beach, California. Last year, he appeared in three games, playing just 30 snaps on defense, recording one tackle against Hawaii on September 16th. He was able to preserve his redshirt. He was a four-star recruit and top-150 player coming out of Long Beach Poly High School in California in 2022.
ESPN ranked him No. 142 in the class of 2023 and the No. 11 player in California.

Oregon Ducks defensive back Daylen Austin may be free from jail, but his punishment from a fatal hit-and-run could end his college career before it even starts. Despite preserving his redshirt status, there is no guarantee that the 19-year-old will hit the field for the 2024 season after his off-the-field actions led to the death of a person.
A hit-and-run with a vehicle is a Class C felony in Oregon punishable by up to five years in prison.
