LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne ended he gymnastics career on a high note after the team won its first NCAA title in program history Saturday.
Olivia Dunne did not compete Saturday but played a vital role during LSU’s impressive season. She was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week earlier this season.
This was supposed to be her final year of gymnastics, but the senior has the opportunity to use a fifth year of eligibility provided to athletes because of the COVID-19 pandemic and return next year. Appearing on TODAY, Dunne has thought about it but has yet to make a final decision.
“It definitely makes me want to come back, but I haven’t quite thought about it completely,” Dunne said. “I’ve just been focused on the now and winning this national title, so I’ll definitely start thinking about it.”
After three rotations, LSU, which finished fourth last year, was only ahead of third-place California by 0.113 points and trailing Utah by 0.037 points. However, senior Sierra Ballard opened the fourth and final rotation with a career-high 9.950 in her sole routine of the day. Aleah Finnegan, Haleigh Bryant, and Kiya Johnson all tied the mark, assisting the Tigers in setting a program record on the beam with a 49.7625, which also guaranteed LSU’s national title.
LSU earned the trophy with a total score of 198.2250.

Dunne was right there cheering on her teammates during and afterward.
“It is still feeling just unreal,” Dunne said. “I’m still trying to get my voice back from cheering so loud. It was an unforgettable experience, and I’ll probably be thinking about it for the rest of my life.”
