North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye is being compared to three top-level quarterbacks by one NFL coach.
Maye is widely expected to be a top-three pick in April’s 2024 NFL Draft, along with USC’s Caleb Williams. The latter is the heavy favorite to go first overall, with Ohio State wideout Marvin Harrison Jr. and LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels the other rounding out the consensus top-four.
According to ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller, one NFC quarterbacks coach views Maye as a comparable to three premier NFL quarterbacks in Josh Allen (Buffalo Bills), Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers) and C.J. Stroud (Houston Texans):
“He’s Josh Allen, Justin Herbert … and I think his arm is comparable to C.J. Stroud.” Those comparisons are high praise and would be tough for new general manager Adam Peters to ignore. Maye’s arm talent and mobility at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds perfectly fit the modern quarterback profile.”
The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Maye pieced together an excellent season with the Tar Heels in 2023, finishing with a 63.3 completion percentage for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns against nine interceptions.
Like Allen, Maye also brings a dynamic rushing ability to his game. He had 1,147 rushing yards and 16 total rushing scores over his final two seasons of college football.
