A fascinating trade proposal has the Chicago Bears dealing the first overall pick in April’s NFL Draft to a quarterback-needy NFC team.
The Bears hold the first overall pick via the Carolina Panthers, who gave up their 2024 first-rounder last year to move up for Bryce Young. The Bears now have to decide on a) keeping the pick and taking a QB, b) taking a non-QB or c) trading the pick to the highest bidder.
Chicago has a promising young quarterback in Justin Fields, who’s coming off the best season of his three-year career. If GM Ryan Poles decides to keep Fields, he’ll surely land a king’s ransom for the top pick.
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon proposed an enticing trade idea that has Chicago dealing the first overall pick to the Washington Commanders in exchange for the No. 2 pick, a 2024 second-round selection and a 2025 third-round pick:
“Since no team has ever jumped directly from No. 2 to No. 1, it’s tough to gauge the value here. Based on the draft pick trade value chart, the Commanders should owe the Bears no more than a second-round selection to make this swap, but that has rarely been an applicable tool for deals involving primo picks with potential franchise quarterbacks in the mix.”
USC’s Caleb Williams is the consensus pick to go first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. And the Commanders are in desperate need of a franchise QB, something they haven’t had since the Joe Gibbs dynasty days.

Gagnon’s proposal is a fair move for both teams here, especially if the Bears aren’t fully sold on Williams. Getting two extra day two picks to move down one spot would be a savvy piece of work for Poles and the rebuilding Bears.
