Some new information pertaining to the sign-stealing accusations surrounding the University of Michigan has surfaced while the NCAA continues its investigation into the program.
According to a report from Sports Illustrated, even the Wolverines’ ball boys were in on the scheme as several sources from an unnamed Big Ten school told the publication that they were told to be wary of the Michigan ball boys by a coach from another school as they were known to eavesdrop on play calls.
The report reads:
“Multiple sources from one Big Ten school told SI that a coach at a different school called them before playing Michigan to warn them about Wolverines ball boys on their sideline listening to play calls and communicating information to the Michigan sideline—holding the football up in one hand to indicate an expected pass, and in the other hand to indicate a run, for instance. (Sources at the school that was warned said they experienced nothing in the game to implicate the Michigan ball boys.)”
The report does note that the school receiving the warning did not see anything to suggest that Michigan’s ball boys were doing anything to give the Wolverines an advantage. But one school was still worried enough to make calls to another.
TCU, who beat Michigan to go to the CFP National Championship game, also received warnings about Michigan and devised a ploy that involved them using dummy signals to fool them into preparing for plays that weren’t coming.
