University of Nebraska’s Women’s Volleyball match against the University of Nebraska Omaha won’t just be a must see game, it could be record breaking.
Tonight’s game, hosted by the Cornhuskers, will take place at Memorial Stadium, where the football team plays, will face the Omaha Mavericks and has reportedly sold over 90,000 tickets for attendance. If the actual attendance matches their projection, this will be the highest attended women’s sports event in history.
Both teams are excited to show the world the level of talent and dedication that women put into the sport, but the attendance record they could potentially set puts them above even the most mainstream sports. For a US game, the largest attendance was for a Basketball world cup finals between the USA and China in 1999, when 90,185 packed into the Rose Bowl. In Women’s sports history, 91,648 is to beat for a UEFA Champions League Match in Barcelona Spain.
The fact that a college volleyball match is in contention for the record is amazing, but the fact that they very well may have broken it is a feat that puts them in a rare category.
The Cornhuskers are one of the most decorated Volleyball teams in the NCAA, with 5 NCAA Championships under their belt as well as a runner-up as recent as 2021. The Mavericks are 7-time conference champions. These women have big hopes for this season. First, break the world record, women. We’re proud of you.
