Spencer Lee’s quest to become the first Iowa wrestler to win 4 NCAA titles came to a shocking end. Lee was pinned by 4th-seeded Matt Ramos of Purdue with 2 seconds left in the semi-finals of his 125-pound match.
Lee was leading the match late in the third period 7-4 when Ramos turned Lee and put him on his back.
Despite winning three national championships during his collegiate career, Lee’s mother, Cathy, was visibly upset after Purdue’s Matt Ramos pulled off the stunning upset in the national semifinals.
The below clip shows Cathy crying, snatching her glasses from her face and using her hands to smash them the into a ball. She would then toss the glasses off to the side.
Lee managed to clinch his third national championship while wrestling on a torn ACL. He won his first three matches against wrestlers from the U.S. Air Force Academy, which allowed him to advance to the semifinals, where he faced Ramos.
Ramos is set to wrestle Princeton’s Patrick Glory in the national championship on Saturday in the 125-pound category.
