Mississippi State is riding high after they cruised to a commanding 48-7 victory vs. visiting SE Louisiana in Week 1 at Davis Wade Stadium.
It was a strong 2023 debut for Bulldogs head coach Zach Arnett, who is taking over for the late Mike Leach.
Leading 20-7 at halftime, the Bulldogs then seized control with a 28-0 second-half shutout of the FCS program. While this was against an FCS opponent, it’s an encouraging start for a Bulldogs squad that will have to go through the vicious gauntlet of the SEC West.
To get ready for next week, the team sent out a graphic of a player hurdling over a cactus as they get ready to face Arizona.
However, they would soon delete that post because fans couldn’t help but point out that the graphic looked like it put the player in a sexual position with the cactus below him.
That graphic was the only thing to go wrong for Mississippi State over the weekend.

Saturday’s game marked the program’s first chance to offer tribute to Mike Leach and his family in front of a home crowd. Leach died on Dec. 12 at age 61 after he was hospitalized because of a heart condition. He had just wrapped up his third regular season with the program, posting an 8-4 record and keeping the Bulldogs’ 13-year bowl streak alive.
Leach was responsible for the development of quarterback Will Rogers, who is the SEC’s all-time leader in completions.
Rogers threw for 227 yards in their first game. he did not have to do much as the running game churned out 300 yards in a well-balanced game for the team.
