Michigan Wolverines quarterback Cade McNamara will be leaving the school to explore other opportunities.
Per Max Olson of The Athletic, McNamara is entering the NCAA transfer portal. McNamara, the Wolverines’ starting quarterback last season, lost his starting job to 19-year-old phenom J.J. McCarthy this year.
McNamara is wrapping up his third season with Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines. The 22-year-old appeared in three games this season before recently undergoing knee surgery that abruptly ended his 2022 campaign.
In 2020, McNamara appeared in four games and completed 43 of 71 pass attempts for 425 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions. He led the Wolverines to a 12-2 record in 2021, completing 64.2 percent of pass attempts for 2,576 yards and 15 touchdowns against six interceptions.
Michigan defeated Iowa 42-3 in the Big Ten Championship Game but fell 34-11 to Georgia in the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship semifinals. The Bulldogs went on to defeat the Alabama Crimson Tide in the national title game.
In three game appearances this season, McNamara completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 180 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The Wolverines soundly won all of those games, putting up over 50 points in each.

But of course, McCarthy has asserted himself as Michigan’s starting quarterback beyond the 2022 campaign. The undefeated Wolverines are coming off one of the biggest regular season wins in the school’s history, having dominated the Ohio State Buckeyes 45-23 at Ohio Stadium.
The victory against Ohio State moved Michigan up to No. 2 in the AP poll, and it looks like they’ll be headed to the College Football Playoff National Championship for the second consecutive year.
McCarthy has completed 65.3 percent of his pass attempts this season for 2,215 yards and 17 touchdowns against only two interceptions. He also has 240 rushing yards to go along with four rushing scores.
