It’s been a troubling year for the University of Michigan and its coaches.
Jim Harbaugh could still face punishment amid the NCAA’s sign-stealing investigation, having already been penalized by the Big 10 earlier in the season. On the basketball side of things, Juwan Howard is being investigated following an alleged incident involving a member of his coaching staff.
On Sunday night, the head coach’s future with the program fell under speculation following a report claiming that the university is reviewing an incident that took place between the former NBA star and a longtime strength coach.
The Athletic’s Brendan Quinn has since offered his findings, noting that Howard’s status remains unchanged while rumors of punches being thrown are unfounded.
“According to a university official with direct knowledge of the matter, Howard’s status as Michigan’s head men’s basketball coach is unchanged,” he reported.
“A confrontation between Howard and longtime U-M strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson in a team practice late last week is being explored and going through a university review process. It is university procedure for such a review to be conducted outside of the athletic department.”
Howard has been the Wolverines’ head coach since 2019 and his time in charge has not been without controversy.
