If the Kansas Jayhawks beat the no. 2 ranked team in the country, but no one is there to see it, did it really happen?
That scenario was seemingly on the verge of taking place earlier today, as the unranked Jayhawks were leading the no. 2 Oklahoma Sooners by scores of 10-0 at half, and 17-7 late in the third quarter. But the most amazing part is that they were doing it WITHOUT the help of a raucous crowd, as pretty much nobody showed up to watch the game…
But then, as the the minutes went by, and the Jayhawks’ lead started to build, the school did what they could to get some fans in the stands to support the team down the final stretch.
They pleaded with fans on Twitter to use their tickets to attend the game:
Then they announced on radio that the gates at the stadium were open. Anyone who wanted to attend the game could do so, with or without a ticket:

Did it work? Well, yes and no.
It certainly did the trick when it comes to getting the fans in the stadium. Here’s a look at the progression of the crowd size:
Based on that, it looks like Kansas was very successful at getting butts in the seats…
HOWEVER!!! As the crowd size grew, the Jayhawks’ leads shrunk…and then it eventually became non-existent, as the Sooners outscored Kansas in the fourth quarter, 21-6, escaping with a 35-23 victory.
