A new graphic shows just how much Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy has regressed ever since Connor Stalions resigned from the school.
Stalions, who worked as a football analyst for Michigan, resigned in early November following allegations that he was the center of the Wolverines’ sign-stealing scheme. The scandal led to head coach Jim Harbaugh being suspended for Michigan’s final three regular season games.
CBS presented a graphic showing McCarthy’s 2023 season stats before and after Stalions’ resignation, and let’s just say that it does not look pretty for the Wolverines whatsoever.
As you can see, McCarthy’s completion percentage dropped by almost 10 points following Stalions’ resignation. He averaged 59 less passing yards per game and had just one touchdown in five games after Stalions stepped away, compared to 18 in his first eight games.
Despite McCarthy’s inconsistent play over those final three games, the Wolverines kept finding ways to win en route to finishing as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. The Wolverines (13-0) will try to punch their ticket to the national championship game when they play No. 4 ranked Alabama in the Rose Bowl.
McCarthy is one of the top graded quarterback prospects for the 2024 NFL Draft class. Some scouts and analysts have a first-round grade on the 20-year-old, though others believe he’s more likely to be a day two pick.
