Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was all smiles after leading the Wolverines to a Rose Bowl win over Alabama on New Year’s Day, with the 27-20 result booking them a spot in the CFP National Championship game set for next week.
Harbaugh, who has come under lots of scrutiny as of late, was asked about his future with the program given his heavy links to an NFL return – the Los Angeles Chargers are thought to have him down as a top priority following the firing of Brandon Staley last month.
Asked whether the natty could be his final game as Michigan coach, he deftly avoided an answer.
“My future consists of a happy flight back to Ann Arbor, Michigan,” he replied, per On3’s Andy Staples.
By all means, such a reply should come as no surprise. There’s no point in entertaining speculation about the NFL right now. Harbaugh should be focused on winning the Wolverines their first title since 1997.
That said, there’s every possibility he leaves. Harbaugh’s regular season consisted of six games sandwiched between three-game suspensions and there could be additional punishment looming as the NCAA hasn’t yet released its findings regarding the sign-stealing probe. But the university is doing its best to keep him, having reportedly offered him a massive extension.
