Jim Harbaugh’s negotiations with the University of Michigan are reported to have hit a snag.
Harbaugh is one of the most sought-after football coaches at the moment and, having led the Wolverines to a National Championship earlier this month, is considering his options.
The 60-year-old is reported to have met with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday, with multiple NFL jobs under consideration. But he is also discussing a potential extension with Michigan as the program has offered him a lucrative deal.
According to John U. Bacon, negotiations have stalled over a particular issue. Harbaugh isn’t thought to have any problems with the sum on the table but he wants immunity from potential punishments given that the university is still under investigation by the NCAA.
College football’s governing body is investigating the program for recruiting violations – Harbaugh already served a self-imposed three-game suspension at the beginning of the season – while the sign-stealing allegations are being looked into. The coach served another suspension at the end of the regular season as the Big Ten banned him for another three games on account of the latter.
It’s believed that the looming sanctions have influenced Harbaugh’s consideration of NFL jobs. But it appears he’s also keen on remaining with the Wolverines just as long as it means he won’t have to go through any more punishment.
