Jerry Jones has sadly passed away.
Jones, not to be confused with the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, was a former longtime Louisville men’s basketball assistant coach. He passed away on Monday at the age of 89.
The former coach was placed in hospice care back in November, per his daughter Sherry. And the Louisville Courier-Journal has revealed multiple former Cardinals players paid him visits during his stay.
Jones was an assistant to iconic head coach Denny Crum from 1973 to 1996. He would also serve as a university relations assistant from 1996 to 2001.
While with the program, he helped them reach the Final Four on five occasions; they also won a pair of national championships. He was inducted into the University of Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998.
“We’re saddened to share the passing of Jerry Jones, longtime assistant coach under the late Denny Crum,” the university said in a statement. “Jones worked on the UofL coaching staff from 1973-1996. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.”
