Bronny James, the highly touted USC freshman and son of Lakers star LeBron James, lost consciousness during a workout at the Galen Center and had to be hospitalized Monday after suffering cardiac arrest during a practice session.
After the cardiac arrest suffered by James, ESPN NFL reporter Jenna Laine decided to open up about her own scary health issues.
“I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t take me to a very dark place every time an athlete experiences a cardiac episode. I had written this last night, reflecting on being back after a hellish year of my own heart issues and how immensely grateful I am to be at camp healthy,” she wrote on Twitter.
“Heart issues are affecting more and more young people. We saw that with Bronny James. Take inventory of your health and your family’s health. Get your checkups. If something feels off, keep digging for answers with your health care provider. And please, get CPR certified,” Laine concluded.
Sudden cardiac arrest kills up to 450,000 Americans every year. Only 40% of people who suffer one receive CPR. Cardiac arrest happens when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating.
The 18-year-old is getting set to enter his freshman year at USC and is ranked 20th in the 2023 ESPN 100 rankings. He is the sixth-rated point guard in the Class of 2023.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who suffered cardiac arrest during a game back in January, tweeted his support: “Prayers to Bronny & The James Family as well (prayer emoji) here for you guys just like you have been for me my entire process.”
This is the second straight year the Trojans program has had a player suffer cardiac arrest as Vincent Iwuchukwu, one of the top incoming freshmen in college basketball last season, suffered cardiac arrest on July 1, 2022, and was hospitalized for a few days.
James is now out of the ICU and in stable condition.
