Former Dallas Cowboys head coach and current NBC “Sunday Night Football” analyst Jason Garrett is reportedly a candidate for one of the NCAA vacancies that recently opened up.
Garrett replaced Wade Phillips as the Cowboys’ head coach in the midst of the 2010 season and held down the role until 2019. He was then hired as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator under Joe Judge in 2020, only to bet let go during a frustrating 2021 season.
The Duke Blue Devils need a new head coach after losing Mike Elko, who left for the Texas A&M vacancy. According to a report from Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Garrett is among the candidates to replace Elko:
“One wild-card option to keep in mind is NBC football analyst Jason Garrett, the former Dallas Cowboys head coach. The 57-year-old Princeton grad has never coached in college football, but he did get strong consideration for the Duke job a few years ago during the search that led to Elko. Garrett was 85-67 in his decade as the Cowboys’ head man. Would he want to jump into college coaching now? And if so, would Duke’s leadership want him? We’ll see.”
You may recall that Garrett was considered a favorite to land the Duke job back in 2021, but the job went to Elko, who had previously served as the Texas A&M defensive coordinator. Garrett was also a finalist for the Stanford Cardinal position last year, but the school wound up hiring Troy Taylor instead.
Garrett went 85-67-0 over his 10 years as Dallas’ head coach, but his tenure there was marred by a lack of postseason success. Dallas only won two playoff games under Garrett (the 2014 and 2018 NFC Wild Card games) and never got past the Divisional Round.
