Thursday night’s James Madison-Marshall game had to come to an abrupt halt after a frightening scene unfolded.
Marshall’s J.J. Roberts, a transfer defensive back from Wake Forest, appeared to injure his neck while making a tackle, and medical personnel had to come out and tend to him.
The West Virginia native was down on the field for 20 minutes before a stretcher came out and he was put on a backboard and wheeled off to cheering fans.
Richmond Times-Dispatch writer Mike Barber reported Roberts gave a thumbs-up gesture to the crowd as he was being wheeled off.
“Edwards Stadium was silent as medical personnel loaded JJ Roberts onto a backboard, then a stretcher. His facemask and shoulder pads have been removed. Cheers from the crowd as Roberts appears to give a thumbs up as he’s wheeled off. Marshall teammates ran to the stretcher,” Barber tweeted.
