Women’s collegiate basketball is so popular that it broke a television viewership record in less than a week. Iowa’s Final Four victory over UConn drew 14.2 million viewers on Friday, making it the most-watched women’s college basketball game ever and ESPN’s most-viewed basketball game overall, the broadcaster reported on Saturday.
With a heated finale, this thrilling game on Friday drew a record-breaking audience of 17 million, more than any NBA Finals or MLB World Series game in the preceding season. In 2023, only five college football games were able to surpass it. Meanwhile, neither the final round of the Masters Tournament nor the Daytona 500 have surpassed Friday’s attendance since 2013. With 18.59 million viewers, the Toronto Raptors and Golden State Warriors defeated Iowa and UConn in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, aired on ABC.

This Iowa-South Carolina final is about to break records
The game on Friday night set new records, becoming the highest-attended basketball game in history and ESPN’s second-most-watched non-football telecast ever. The USMNT vs. Portugal 2014 FIFA World Cup match drew 18.2 million viewers, a record that should be broken in Sunday’s final.
It’s not impossible to imagine that the Hawkeyes’ next championship game against the Gamecocks of South Carolina will break another record. Caitlin Clark and Iowa will face an undefeated South Carolina team in the legendary rematch, drastically different from the team they defeated in the Final Four last year.
There is about to be a record-breaking Iowa-South Carolina final. Caitlin Clark, the all-time leading scorer in college basketball, wants to finish her four years of play before moving on to the WNBA. Centre Kamilla Cardoso, who injured her right knee during South Carolina’s Final Four win against NC State, will also be the focus of attention.
