The Houston Cougars’ football team is throwing it back to the old days for their season opener this Saturday.
The Cougars revealed their plans to wear Houston Oilers-themed throwback jerseys for the team’s first game of 2023 against the UTSA Roadrunners. Prior to becoming the Tennessee Titans, the NFL franchise played in Houston with the “Oilers” nickname from 1960 to ’96.
The Oilers spent their first 10 years in the AFL before the league merged with the NFL for the 1970 season. They played their home games at the Houston Astrodome from 1968 until the club’s final year in 1996.
Houston relocated to Tennessee in 1997, and the team retained the “Oilers” name for two seasons before switching to “Titans” in 1999. Houston got its NFL team back in 2002, when the Texans were introduced as an expansion franchise.
Last season, the Cougars finished 8-5 and emerged victorious in the Independence Bowl, defeating Louisiana 23-16. Their star quarterback of 2022, Clayton Tune, was drafted in the fifth round by the Arizona Cardinals in April.
