Two new odds-on co-favorites for the 2023 Heisman Trophy have emerged, and reigning winner Caleb Williams is not among the contenders.
The PointsBet sportsbook posted its updates 2023 Heisman Trophy nods, with Washington Huskies’ QB Michael Penix Jr. and Michigan Wolverines’ signal-caller J.J. McCarthy sharing the best odds at +275.
Three other quarterbacks in USC’s Jayden Daniels (+450), Oregon’s Bo Nix (+550) and Florida State’s Jordan Travis (+700) round out the top five. Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. has the best odds among non-QBs at +900.
Throughout the year, Williams has been the consensus favorite to go first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. This year, he has completed 68.2 percent of his pass attempts for 2,646 yards and 25 touchdowns against only four interceptions.
But Penix Jr. has been on another level for the Huskies this year, completing 68.8 percent of pass attempts for 2,945 yards, 24 touchdowns and only six interceptions.
Along with Penix Jr. and Williams, McCarthy will be one of the top quarterbacks selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 202-pound McCarthy has thrown for 1,799 yards and 18 touchdowns against only three interceptions to go along with 168 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Penix Jr. and McCarthy are the co-favorites for now, but a lot can obviously change in the coming weeks. Needless to say, it’s a thrilling Heisman Trophy race that promises to go down to the very wire.
