LSU defensive back Greg Brooks Jr. cannot catch a break. He was recently diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer, the school announced Wednesday.
Brooks just underwent surgery in September to remove a brain tumor and had been awaiting results from a biopsy. Just ahead of his surgery, he was ruled out of the Tigers’ victory against Mississippi State for what coach Brian Kelly described as a “medical emergency.”
Kelly stated Brooks had been dealing with bouts of vertigo in the offseason.
A fund has been launched by the Tiger Athletic Foundation to help cover medical expenses for Brooks and his family as he continues treatment.
The report from ESPN states, “He had successful surgery Sept. 15 to remove the tumor, located between his cerebellum and brain stem, but his speech and ability to communicate have been impacted, according to Dr. Catherine O’Neal of Our Lady of the Lake Health.”

Brooks has not appeared on the field for LSU since the team’s Week 2 home win over Grambling State.
Brooks is from the New Orleans area and played three seasons at Arkansas before he decided to transfer to LSU in 2022. He started 14 games for the Tigers last season as they won the SEC West Division and later notched a bowl game victory against Purdue. He ended 2022 with 63 total tackles, four pass breakups and two interceptions. He previously totaled 103 tackles in three seasons with the Razorbacks.
So far in 2023, he has played in two games and was in on eight tackles before leaving the team late last week.
He is unlikely to play another game this year as he recovers.
