Fans are not happy with the latest George Washington University sports team name change and are making their feelings known.
The university is named after a known slave owner, so the name Colonials was never going to go down well. It’s not non-racist…
The uni has announces that they will be the Revolutionaries going forward, but it just doesn’t make sense, at least not the way they explain it.
“After 12 months, 47,000 points of feedback and 8,000 moniker suggestions whittled down in a comprehensive community engagement process to four finalists, the university announced on Wednesday its new moniker: the Revolutionaries,” the school announced on Wednesday, much to the annoyance of fans on Twitter.
President Mark S. Righton said the change came as” the result is a moniker that broadly reflects our community – and our distinguished and distinguishable GW spirit.”

It’s really hard to believe that 8,000 suggestions were considered given the name they came up with. You have to give them credit for getting rid of the Colonials moniker given that it’s representative of colonizers, which is not a friendly term if you’re black or Native American. But there’s literally nothing to suggest there’s anything revolutionary about George Washington or the school.
Anyhow, the name change is set to take effect this year.
