Former UNC basketball standout Ademola Okulaja has reportedly passed away.
The News & Observer confirmed his death with the university on Tuesday.
Per the school’s verified Twitter account:
“Carolina Basketball is saddened to learn of the recent, premature passing of Tar Heel forward Ademola Okulaja (1995-99) at age 46. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, friends and teammates. #CarolinaFamily”
Okulaja’s former UNC teammates posted to social media about news of his death.
“This is so painful,” Vince Carter posted. “We’re going to miss you my boy. RIP. I’m praying for your kids and family. Without a doubt you have touched the lives of many with your kindness. 1 thing for sure you will not be forgotten…. Love you Oak #3MusketeersForever.”

“I’m sick to my stomach right now. Got terrible news about one of my brothers that I played with for 3 years at UNC. Ademola Okulaja, I can’t believe you’re gone bro,” former UNC guard Terrance Newby posted. “This is a terrible loss for UNC Basketball. Oak #13 was the true definition of a warrior, he gave 110% every possession on the court and he was a great teammate off the tour. You will be missed bro. RIP Tarheel.”
Okulaja played for the Tar Heels from 1995-99, spanning the end of iconic coach Dean Smith’s career and into the Bill Guthridge era. He was a part of two Final Four teams and counted stars Vince Carter and Antwan Jamison among his teammates.
Okulaja averaged 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds as a senior in 1998-99. He was named first-team All-ACC that season.
Ademola Okulaja would go on to earn All-ACC honors as a senior, as well as the team’s MVP award. He later played professionally in Europe and represented Germany in two FIBA World Cup tournaments.
His cause of death has not been revealed.
