A former Colorado player has discussed the treatment he received from Deion Sanders after the Pro Football Hall of Famer took over the program.
Things haven’t been going great for Sanders as of late. The Buffaloes head coach is going through a breakup, with his longtime girlfriend announcing their split via social media on Sunday. He has also lost two coaches from his staff, Sean Lewis and Nick Williams, while a few recruits have walked back on their commitments to the program.
Coach Prime has since gotten called out by one of his former players.
Ex-CU linebacker Eoghan Kerry recently appeared on the ‘Fearless with Jason Whitlock’ podcast, where he recalled his time with the former star cornerback. Kerry claims to have been ignored by Sanders, who eventually pushed him out of the setup.
“I thought he was going to come in, mentor me, and kind of take me under his wing, because he wanted to see people like me who grew up with their mom and of African-American descent excel,” he explained. “To be ignored and, eventually, dismissed hurt. I can’t speak to why he did it. I just have to respect that he did.”
Prime hasn’t responded to the claim. Perhaps he does not need to as he did warn that his job was to send every player packing as soon as he arrived. He put out a new-look squad in 2023 that won three more games than the Buffs were able to win last season. But the expectations will be a lot higher in 2024.
