Carlos Londarrius Stephens won’t be seeing the light of day and be free from prison possibly for the remainder of his life.
The former UAB running back was found guilty of capital murder in the death of of 20-year-old Destiny Washington.
Destiny Washington, a beloved 20-year-old nursing student, was shot to death in 2020 in the parking lot of UAB’s student center during the sale of a pair of AirPods that Washington’s boyfriend was selling to Stephens’ girlfriend. That deal had been agreed upon through Facebook Marketplace earlier that day.
Washington and her boyfriend felt uncomfortable and thought Stephens was trying to pay with counterfeit money. When they backed out of the transaction, Stephens opened fire at their car and fatally struck Washington.
Stephens has been in jail since Dec. 21, 2020.
The District Attorney said Stephens’ sentencing is set for May 18, 2022.
