Tragic news from the college football world as Mike Merritt died in a car crash Saturday morning. He was 38 years old.
The former UCF tight end was killed in an Orange County wreck around 3:40 a.m. The police report stated that he was driving the wrong way in an E-Pass lane when the accident occurred.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of Mike Merritt,” UCF’s Varsity Knights athletics page posted Tuesday on Twitter. “He made a significant impact in the lives of his teammates, coaches, and friends. Our condolences go out to Mike’s loved ones during this time.”
Kattie Merritt Sherrod, his mother, spoke out after his untimely death and revealed something that he was dealing with prior to the accident.
“I am going to miss my son. The more I talk, the more I realize this is reality — he is not coming back,” Merritt Sherrod said.
“I know he was dealing with something with CTE but I don’t understand why he was driving on the wrong side of the road,” Merritt Sherrod said.
Merritt, who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the then-St. Louis Rams, leaves behind two children.
