On Aug. 30, police found 21-year-old gymnast Kara Welsh dead in her off-campus apartment after being shot multiple times. Luckily, though, someone has quickly been taken into custody for the murder.
On Tuesday, the Whitewater Police Department announced in a Facebook post that 23-year-old Chad Richards had been arrested and was scheduled to appear in court on Sep. 3.
According to TMZ, Richards was originally present when police arrived at the apartment and found Welsh dead.
Richards reportedly shot Welsh after an argument had started between the two. He is also a former wrestler for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, who competed from 2020 – 2022.
As of now, Richards is being charged with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of dangerous weapons, and disorderly conduct while armed. He is currently held with a bond set at $1 million.
According to the Milwaukee Journal-Senteniel, Judge Estee Scholtz felt the amount was appropriate due to the violent nature of the crime and the possibility of flight risk. Richards is also not allowed to go back on campus.

“To put into words the impact Kara had on the Warhawk community is impossible,” said gymnastics Coach Jen Regan. “A powerful athlete, dedicated teammate, and the light in everyone’s dark days, Kara truly lifted each and every one of us up in her time as a Warhawk gymnast. There are no words to describe the void we all feel in our hearts, but Kara’s legacy will live on through Warhawk gymnastics forever.”
